"Growing up, I absorbed a lot of negative stereotypes about how I should behave as a black teenager and fell into some of the same traps that a lot of black male youth do. It wasn't preordained that I would go to Columbia or Harvard. I didn't have a father in the house, which meant that I didn't have a lot of role models in terms of how I should operate."
